Questions & Informational

  • Treatment begins by thoroughly removing excess wax and debris from ear canals.
  • Cats are then treated for 3-6 weeks, treating approximately twice weekly.
  • The ear canals are flushed thoroughly using a good ear cleaning solution. The ears are gently massaged and then cleaned thoroughly with dry cotton balls.
  • A miticide agent is then applied to the ear canal, inside flap of the ear and the area of skin just in front of each ear. The solution is then massaged gently into the ear
  • If the ears are seriously inflamed or infected a Topical Steroid/antibiotic/ antifungal agent may also be used.
  • Ivermectin can be used in addition to the above treatment. Injections are typically given every 1-2 weeks for 2-3 treatments. Their use is solely off-label hence this treatment option should be discussed with your veterinarian prior to its use.
  • Topical treatments such as shampoos, flea sprays etc. should be used regularly to treat any mites living outside the ears. (1-3 times weekly.)
  • Since the mites may live off the animal for a period of time, the en-vironment should be thoroughly cleaned and treated with an insecticide as for flea control
  • The animal should be checked at least once during the treatment period to assess progress and again at the end of treatment to assure the infestation has been eliminated.
